Care & Maintenance

How to look after your iQ products

Two‑minute care guide for shutters, blinds, awnings & screens

Keep Your iQ Finish Looking New

At iQ Shutters, we build for Queensland conditions, but the coast, sun, and everyday use still call for simple, regular care. Below is a quick reference for day‑to‑day cleaning and long‑life maintenance across our product range.

Aluminium Shutters (internal & external)

  • Regular clean: Soft brush‑down, then a bucket of lukewarm water with a mild pH‑neutral detergent. Rinse, wipe dry.
  • Frequency: Internal every 2–3 months; coastal/external monthly.
  • What to avoid: Abrasive pads, solvent cleaners, and pressure washers directly on joints.
  • Tip: Pay attention to water traps (bottom rails, hinge sides). Wipe dry to protect the powder coat.

Poly & Timber Shutters

  • Poly: Light dusting; wipe with a damp microfibre cloth and mild detergent. Dry immediately.
  • Timber: Dry dust only; if needed, a slightly damp cloth, then dry.
  • Avoid: Steam, excess water, polishes containing silicone or wax build‑up.

Roller Blinds (sunscreen, light‑filter & blockout)

  • Regular cleaning: Close the blind, dust with a soft brush or vacuum on low suction with a clean upholstery head.
  • Spot clean: Dab (don’t rub) with lukewarm water and mild detergent; support the fabric from behind or underneath.
  • Avoid: Harsh chemicals, soaking, or scrubbing the blockout backing.

Curtains

  • Day‑to‑day cleaning: Shake out dust; use a garment steamer lightly from a distance to relax creases.
  • Deep clean: Follow fabric label; most are professional dry‑clean only.
  • Avoid: Machine washing unless the fabric label explicitly allows it.

Zipscreens & External Awnings (drop arm, folding arm, multistop)

  • Fabric clean: Hose gently, sponge with mild detergent, rinse well, dry before rolling up.
  • Hardware: Wipe arms, brackets, and extrusions with pH‑neutral detergent; check fasteners.
  • Avoid: Rolling away for long periods when wet – this encourages mould.

Security Screens

  • Mesh & frame: Wash with pH‑neutral detergent, soft brush or sponge, then rinse.
  • Frequency: Inland every 2–3 months; coastal monthly.
  • Avoid: Harsh chemicals and abrasive tools.
  • Tip: Rinse salt spray regularly to protect the finish.

Motors & Remotes

  • Motors: Keep dry; don’t spray lubricant into motor heads.
  • Remotes: Replace batteries as required; keep out of direct heat.

If operation changes: Check power, receiver light, and battery first before calling support.

Maintenance

Quick Maintenance Schedule

  • Monthly (coastal/external): Aluminium, security screens, Zipscreens/awnings.
  • Every 2–3 months (internal/inland): Aluminium shutters, roller blinds, curtains (light refresh).
  • Seasonally: Full hardware check of hinges, brackets, fasteners, and any moving parts; wipe and dry.

Helpful Do’s & Don’ts

Do
  • Use soft microfibre cloths and pH‑neutral detergent.
  • Rinse and dry metal finishes for a great long‑term powder‑coat appearance.
  • Close blades and support panels while cleaning for stability.
Don’t
  • Use abrasive pads, scourers, cream cleansers, or solvents.
  • Pressure‑wash close to joints, motors, or powder‑coated surfaces.
  • Store external fabrics wet for extended periods.
